With a spectacular day of scenery and scoring, Johnson blasted a tee shot on the third hole at Pebble Beach and then pitched looking for eagle from 41 yards while watching green. He added another eagle on his approach to a 9-under 63 plus a three-way tie atop the leaderboard Thursday.

Then he got a chance to have fun playing the Spyglass Hill course containing never really been that kind to him within the sort of environment that they generally prefers, which will be (relatively) cast in stone, rather than soft, soggy issues that players usually see whenever they arrived at this tournament in winter.

Making his season debut around the PGA Tour, Woods continued down the solid path which has seen him play well since November in Australia, to his charity tournament in Los angeles to the Middle East now to Northern California, where he shot 4-under-par 68.

It turned out the fourth-best round for the course that is generally considered probably the most difficult in the three-tournament rotation -- Monterey Peninsula and Pebble Beach being the rest. And it was marked by a good statistical day that saw the first sort No. 1 hit a lot of fairways and greens.

Atwal praised his game, as did Romo. Coach Sean Foley was pleased, noting how good Woods hit it about the range prior to the round, and his ping g15 driver capability to grow it towards the course. A huge crowd of spectators seemed very happy to see Tiger make six birdies and simply two bogeys.

But one guy was obviously a bit miffed if it was across. Not fuming, not aggravated. Just perturbed how the round wasn't better.
